April 27 – National Tell a Story Day

Happy National Tell a Story Day!

The art of storytelling is the oldest method of passing on family history and traditions. Oral history is not always completely accurate, but always holds an element of truth and entertainment. Storytellers weave their stories together sometimes adding or taking away bits and pieces for the occasion or the audience. Children’s authors who are true storytellers, are beloved by generations of children, parents, and teachers. Some of my favorite storytellers are Patricia Polacco, John Steptoe, Verna Aardema, Gerald McDermott, and Tomi dePaola. There works are too numerous to list, but one example from each is pictured below.
